It’s about that time of year when everyone gets excited about St. Patrick’s Day. But keep in mind there is more to Irish culture than just beer! In fact, Irish cuisine has lots of great dishes. Here is a list of five places in the city to sample authentic Irish cuisine. Don’t worry, they all serve Irish beer and whiskey too!
James Hoban’s Irish Restaurant & Bar
1 Dupont Circle N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20036
(202) 223-8440

This popular Irish bar and restaurant has a menu full of great Irish dishes. Sample classic Irish potato and leek soup, a cheese plate made with Irish cheddar and Irish blue cheese with brown bread, a full Irish breakfast with tomatoes, mushrooms and eggs and even a chocolate Guinness brownie. It doesn’t get more Irish than that! They also have a great selection of beers to enjoy with your food.

The Dubliner

Washington, DC 20001

Well, the name says it all. You know a place named after Ireland’s capital is bound to have good Irish fare. What’s especially good about the Dubliner is their fun Irish brunch. Sample the Irish toast with maple syrup, Shrove cakes — which are Irish buttermilk pancakes served with real Irish butter — or Irish eggs Benedict. For dessert, sample cheesecake made with Irish liquor or bread pudding made with an Irish custard.

Irish Channel Restaurant And Pub
500 H St. NW
Washington, DC
(202) 216-0046

There’s something here for everyone at some point in each week’s packed event calendar. Watch sports on one of their 14 large screen TVs, check out one of their live musical acts four nights a week, karaoke and trivia nights. Or come for lunch and take in some nice spring weather on their outdoor patio while enjoying a classic Irish lunch and a couple drinks. Even with all the fun and activities, this place’s claim to fame is still its menu. Irish classic meals include shepard’s pie, corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips and more.

McGinty’s a local favorite in the DC area, largely due to the fun atmosphere, delicious fare, and great drinks.
