Washington, D.C. in summer can be unbearably hot due to the crazy humidity the city gets. One way to cool down is to spend a day at the pool. Even if you don’t have a pool in your backyard or on the roof of your apartment building, you can still go to a public pool, of which D.C. offers an abundance. Here are the best watering holes to take a dip in around the Washington, D.C. area.

The Wilson Aquatic Center is an indoor aquatic center located in Tenleytown. The facility includes a multipurpose room, locker rooms, children’s pool, adult whirlpool, and an indoor swimming pool. The 50 meter by 25 yard pool is big enough for laps, and has a set day-by-day schedule. Whether you want to swim for exercise, fun or training purposes, you will enjoy this center and its amemities. And with all the classes they offer, the whole family can learn the proper swimming techniques and become better and stronger swimmers.

Banneker Pool is one of the most well known public pools in Washington, D.C. Located on Howard University’s campus, the pool seems to be in constant use during the summer. While it isn’t the biggest in the area, many residents enjoy the large pool and go back every summer. With no frills, the pool is usually full of kids just having fun. Perhaps not the best pool for lap swimmers and those in training, it is more for family fun days outside. Take your family and beat the heat.

Upton Hill Regional Park is a large wooded park with batting cages, a miniature golf course, a playground, trails and the main attraction: The Ocean Dunnes Waterpark. The Northern Virginia waterpark is one of the biggest attractions in the area during the summer and features waterfalls, a dumping bucket, a large pool and waterslides. The two slides are both around 200 feet long, with one of the tube slides shrouded in complete darkness for a thrilling ride. The Martin Luther King, Jr. outdoor pool in Silver Spring is a fun, large public pool. This is 50-meter L-shaped pool with a diving area, a Lazy River, leisure pool, tot pool and waterslides. There is something for all skill levels and ages at this pool. You can do laps while the young kids splash around and go down the slide more times than you count.
