This family-friendly event features not one, but two fireworks displays to accommodate both early birds and night owls. During the day, family-oriented activities will include face painting, a Drum and Bugle Corps band as well as activities with the Chesapeake Children’s Museum. Daytime fun will culminate in a fireworks show that will take place in the early evening. Afterwards, live music will fill the air until midnight when a second fireworks display will welcome in the New Year. This action-packed event celebrates the New Year through the performing arts. Local and regional talent of all kinds will showcase their gifts in the form of magicians, clowns, face painters and musicians including jazz quartets and woodwind instrument players. There will also be carnival games, arts and crafts, puppet theatre, story time and interactive games for children. The over 100 performances and activities will be held throughout the city in places like coffee shops, stores, public buildings, museums and hotels—all within walking distance. But the highlight of the night will be the fireworks display on the Potomac River. Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille will count down the last few moments just before midnight and the fireworks bonanza.

Here’s another family-friendly event where you can enjoy fireworks without having to stay up late to see them. The fireworks display begins at 7 p.m., so you can have fun and take in the show without having to burn the midnight oil. But before the fireworks, attendees can enjoy the Symphony of Lights—a longtime holiday tradition within the community which features 70 large-scale animated and stationary holiday-themed light creations that event-goers can enjoy on foot.
