Washington Photo Safari has an interesting approach to teaching both the beginner and the veteran photographer how to take better digital photographs. Students go out and about in Washington D.C. on safaris with a professional photographer who will guide the student in various methods and provide tips as the student take their pictures. Any camera is welcomed, from cell phone cameras to expensive digital SLR cameras.

The Washington School of Photography works with about 100 students a year and has a professional program of lessons with either day or night classes available. If students do not want to go for professional lessons, but just want to learn the basics to improve their photography skills, they have workshops open to the public evenings and weekends with lessons on subjects such as: minishots, intro and intermediate, outdoor, lighting & studio, digital specialties and fine art.

Penn Camera Photography Classes are given in multiple locations throughout the Washington D.C. area. Each class is a one session lesson. Some of the subjects covered in the lessons include Canon Print Master Workshop, Introduction to Digital Photography, Sports Techniques, Digital Image Editing, RAW File Capture & Editing and Advanced Digital Image Editing Layers & Selections.

The Smithsonian Resident Associate Program (RAP) is a division of the Smithsonian Institution and offers photography classes to all ages in the Washington, D.C., area.
Some of the classes offered include: Introduction to Black and White Photography, The Joy of Photography, and The Essence of Photography. For students with traditional film based cameras, classes are offered in darkroom usage as well.

Photo Works at Glen Echo Park has a large variety of photography lessons available for photographers at all levels of learning. They offer digital photography programs supported by state-of-the-art computer technology and addressing the practical problems of the digital darkroom. Classes in Photoshop are offered as well. Most classes are taught by well known area photographers. There are programs for young photographers and a popular summer camp program.
