Apple picking is one of the many highlights of fall. It is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, and at the end of the day you will have a basket of bright, juicy apples. Keep reading for five perfect places near D.C. for apple picking. All of these farms are within a couple hours drive of the city. Make sure you have your apple recipes ready!

Larriland Farm has loads of fruits and vegetables available for picking, with apple being one of the most popular. The farm offers nearly two dozen varieties of apples, including gala, fuji and pink lady apples. Availability depends on the time of year, so you will have to check the website to find out which kind of apple is available during which month. Larriland also offers apple recipes on its website, just in case you pick too many and don’t know what to do with them.

This charming orchard has apple picking throughout the summer and fall as well as orchard tours, which are fun and educational. Catoctin Mountain Orchard offers a whole host of apple varieties, including cortland, empire and cameo. The orchard also has a bakery with fresh apple pies, and a store where you can buy jams and other goods.

Stribling Orchard is big, family-owned farm in Virginia that loves to have visitors. Feel free to bring a picnic when you go apple picking, and if you forget to pack one you can always buy bread, cheese and pie from the bakery. During apple picking season, you can enjoy hot apple cider, made from Stribling’s own apples of course. Contact the orchard for a tour during apple season, when you can learn all about the farm’s apple trees and the different kinds of apples available.

Great Country Farms takes apple season very seriously. In addition to apple picking, there is apple cider pressing demonstrations, apple wine tastings and apple butter for sale. Jump on its complimentary wagon ride to get to the orchard where you can engage in hours of apple picking fun. Before you leave, enjoy the farm market when you go for picking, which has baked goods, cider slushies and even hot cider donuts.

Twelve different varieties of apples are available every fall at this wonderful orchard. A good time to go is during the apple harvest festival, which is the second weekend of October. You can indulge in wagon rides, live music and apple cobbler before or after you do your apple picking.
