Everyone likes to party, have a drink or two and enjoy themselves when out on the town. Most bars have a certain clientele in mind that they hope to draw in when they open their doors every night. The bars on this best list cater to the LGBT community. Whether you are straight, gay, bisexual or somewhere in between, make a point of visiting one or all of these great bars in the District.

MOVA Lounge

MOVA Lounge DC is bar and then some. It has indoor and outdoor seating on the rooftop, and during the summer, the bar is open seven days a week. In the winter (November-March), MOVA is open Tuesday through Sunday. There is no cover charge and daily happy hour runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Sundays, the bar transforms into a comedy venue with the Glo’s Glitter Comedy Showcase. Vanity Wednesdays feature some of the hottest DJs and musical artists around. Valid ID is required to enter.

Phase 1 is the oldest lesbian bar in the U.S. The bar opened its doors in 1970 on 8th Street. It now has another location on Dupont Circle (1415 22nd Street NW). The bar is open Wednesday through Sunday and draws in a healthy crowd each night. Every first Friday is Flannel Friday, the second Wednesday of the month is Jello Wrestling Night and once a month, the bar has themed karaoke, drag kings and burlesque shows. Also, its most talked about night is Shirtless Saturdays.

Cobalt is a bar, nightclub, lounge (30 Degrees) and restaurant (Level One). This bar is open seven days a week and specials are available every day, including Sunday. Some of the special events at Cobalt are the weekly Hot Body Contest, Free Vodka Friday, Rumba Latina with GoGo Dancers and karaoke twice a week. Every Monday night, the bar hosts a drag show. BARE DC is one of the most talked about lesbian parties and takes place every third Saturday.

If you are a sports fanatic, you will fall in love with Nellie’s Sport Bar. The bar is open seven days a week and has one of the best happy h for specials daily from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Every night of the week features a different event – Poker Face, Drag Brunch, Smart Ass Trivia, karaoke, etc. Plus, the bar supports all LGBT sports and teams in the DMV area.

Number Nine

Number Nine is located in Logan Circle and is open seven days a week with no cover charge. Saturday through Thursday’s happy hour from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. features a two-for-one drink special. Friday’s happy hours offers half price on all drinks. One of the unique features of this bar is the second floor – the video bar. There is a VJ playing the best in music videos along with movies, TV shows and sports.

Ziegfeld and Secrets are two clubs at one location. Ziegfeld’s is open Friday and Saturday 
and Secrets is open Wednesday through Sunday.
Secrets has something unique to offer its patrons – all male, all nude dancers from Wednesday through Sunday. Every fourth Wednesday of the month is an Amateur Dancer Contest and every Thursday night is Shirtless Night. Ziegfeld showcases the best in female illusionist (aka female impersonators) on Fridays and Saturdays.

There are different specialty nights for various groups including Hot Jock Night Contest, Boys of Leather Night, SigMa Night, Onyx Night and Bears Bar Night. Plus, weekly events occur like Jock & Boots Fridays, Otter Crossing and Gear Night. DC Eagle is open seven days a week. The bar has daily happy hours specials from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Town Danceboutique is a weekend-only bar and nightclub, from Friday to Sunday. The bar has two levels with two different DJs playing music. Every night there is a Drag Queen Show at 10:30 p.m. Then, the GoGo Boys come out at 11 p.m. The cover charge varies depending on the evening, your age and when you arrive. Lace Boutique Lounge caters to the lesbian community, but is open to all. It is a bar, nightclub and restaurant. Here, every night is ladies night. Lace is open Wednesday through Saturday and there is a dress code: no sneakers, athletic wear, timberlands or baseball caps. Some featured events include open mic night and karaoke.
