Bens Next Door (bensnextdoor.com)

As a geographical bridge between the North and South as well as being a cultural melting pot, Washington, DC has a vast variety of food options. Despite the upscale and often exotic options, it should be noted that the down home foods can be quite a bright spot in the DC region… especially the fried chicken!

Chicken Basket

11435 Georgia Avenue
Silver Spring, MD 20902
301-949-8818

I’ve been going to Chicken Basket since the late 80’s. Everything is made to order. The chicken is always steaming hot and sprinkled with there secret seasoning. They always have friendly service and great prices. Check there daily specials.

Hitching Post

200 Upshur Street NW
Washington, DC 20011
202-726-1511

Great down home Southern cooking with all your favorites including Fried Chicken & Catfish, Mac N Cheese, Collard Greens and Spinach. The fried chicken is perfect, very crispy, moist not greasy. Prices are reasonable.

Cluck U Chicken

9426 Lanahm Severn Road
Lanham, MD 20706
301-459-0089

The Honey Fried Chicken is one of a kind. The wings are incredible and the selection of sauces is unmatched. Try the 9-1-1 sauce. You’ll need to sign a waiver first. Also, no trip to Cluck U is complete without the Clucker Bees which are biscuits dropped in grease and then covered with honey or powdered sugar.

The General Store

6 Post Office Road
Silver Spring, MD 20910
301-562-8787

The General Store is a nice little country restaurant tucked away near Kensington, MD. The made to order to order fried chicken may take 15 to 20 minutes to come out but it’s worth every minute. The original family batter recipe and large serving sides take you on trip down memory lane to how your “Mom” would cook on Sundays. Great service and reasonable prices.
