In the mood for some live music but don’t want to throw down the hefty tab for tickets? DC has several music venues with various music genres that can fit your price range. Some even have weekly live music events for free. The following DC music venues have live events for $30 or less and some have live music seven days a week.


DC9 Club

DC9 Club is open seven nights a week and is a live music venue for regional indie bands. The price for most music events range from $5 to $20. Some events are free with the purchase of a drink. Music events are standing room only, but the venue serves food and has a bar with a booth area. You must be 21 or over to enter.

U Street Music Hall

U Street Music Hall is a dance club and live music venue in the U Street Corridor. The tickets for the live shows average between $10 to $30. This venue presents a wide range of music genres like hip hop, rock, pop and alternative. Most events are 18 and over. Check the website for each event’s age requirement and admission price.

Black Cat features independent and alternative local, regional, national and international music groups. It is open seven nights week and has two stages – main stage and back stage. The price for music events ranges from $5 to $20. Black Cat offers a bar called the Red Room Bar (no cover charge). This music venue also has the cafe (Food for Thought) on its premise. It serves vegan and vegetarian entrees along with hamburgers and other traditional late-night food items.

Madam’s Organ is an internationally known blues bar and soul food restaurant. It is open seven days a week showcasing the best in blues, jazz, bluegrass, calypso, latin jazz, R&B and funk. The 9:30 Club is open seven days a week and if features live music acts almost every night. Most music events range from $15  to $30. Unless otherwise posted, 9:30 is an all-ages music venue for all shows. There is a bar on the premise and you must be 21 or over to be served. This music venue hosts various music genres including punk, rap, heavy metal, R&B, alternative, country and more.

If you are in the mood for a Latin vibe, Rumba Cafe is the place to be. With everything from afro-Cuban jazz to South American rock, Rumba Cafe is the hottest venue for Latin music. Sit down at the bar or restaurant and enjoy the music for free as there is no cover charge. The weekly music artists are listed on Rumba’s Facebook page. Limited seating and space is available and you must be 21 or over to order alcoholic drinks.

The historic jazz and blues club Bohemian Caverns has been the “Sole Home for Soul Jazz” for over 85 years. For a nice, mellow evening of good music, Bohemian Caverns is the spot for such late-night jam sessions. Price tickets for some of the hottest jazz artists range from $10 to $30 at this club. It has two open mic nights. Wednesdays are the Verse Open Mic Nights and Thursdays are the Jazz Open Mic Nights. Most of the shows are open to all ages.
