One of Washington’s first art museums remains one of its finest. From works by early American artists Gilbert Stuart, Rembrandt Peale, Mary Cassett and John Singer Sergeant to contemporary living artists, the Corcoran’s collection continually draws crowds. Founded “for the purpose of encouraging American Genius,” the museum gives a boost to artists from the Washington area, many of whom study at the Corcoran’s School of Art. Fans of photography will always find a compelling reason to return as many special exhibits feature photography. Open Wednesday through Sunday.

America’s first museum of modern art started as a house. When homeowner and museum founder Duncan Phillips bought Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s festive “Luncheon of the Boating Party” in 1923, he predicted, “People will travel thousands of miles to our house to see it.” One of Washington’s best art museums is also known for its special exhibits that offer fresh perspectives of contemporary and modern artists all shown in a former house, albeit a grand one, that has been added on to over the years. Open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
