Ask a Washington, D.C. Expert: Fourth of July Cocktail Recipes

Independence Day in the nation’s capitol is particularly special, and it is the perfect opportunity to have a fabulous party. Make great food, invite your friends over and, most importantly, serve a few holiday-themed cocktails. Below are two recipes for drinks crafted by well-known D.C. mixologists Ari and Micah Wilder. These recipes epitomize the 4th of July, and are easy enough for you to make at home.

Ari and Micah Wilder are local mixologists with more than 30 years of mixology experience. In addition to working with numerous restaurants to develop their cocktail menus, these two brothers also co-own Red Light, a cocktail bar, with restauranteur Aaron Gordon. Their attention to detail and impeccable taste allows them to craft the most delicious and beautiful cocktails which are available at all of the restaurants they work with. Here, they have provided the recipes to two exceptional 4th of July-themed beverages that are bound to impress your family and friends this Independence Day.

Boston Tea Party

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle Irish whiskey
  • 10 oz. Rotheman & Winter Peach Liqueur
  • 10 oz. lemon juice
  • 10 black tea bags
  • 32 oz. peach juice
  • 16 oz. honey syrup

Directions:

  1. Take 1 bottle of Irish whiskey and combine with 10 black tea bags in a pitcher. Stir ingredients every five minutes for 30 minutes to expedite the infusion. After 6 stirrings, separate the black tea from the whiskey.
  2. Make honey syrup by combining 2 parts honey and 1 part water and then simmer to bind the syrup.
  3. Combine the bottle of black tea whiskey, peach liqueur, fresh lemon juice, peach juice and honey syrup. You can tune the sweetness based on your independent liking.

Cocktail from Red Light (Credit, Priya Konings)

Blue Coats

Ingredients: 

  • 1 bottle Blue Coat Gin
  • 12 oz. Combier Orange Liqueur
  • 12 oz. Luxardo Cherry Maraschino Liqueur
  • 2 bottles Peychaud’s Bitters
  • 1 quart pineapple juice
  • 16 oz. honey syrup
  • 10 oz. lemon juice

Directions:

  1. Combine ingredients in a punch bowl. You can tune the sweetness based on your independent liking.
  2. Garnish with pineapples, orange wheels, sprigs of mint and powder with sugar.
