While some say school safety hinges on guns, cameras or alarms in classrooms, Mark Gomer and Kristi Schiller think specially trained dogs should take point in preventing violence in schools.
In the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Pembroke Pines, students returning to school this year are being greeted not only by their teachers and principal. They’re also meeting the armed school resource officer who will be stationed permanently on campus.
Gov. Bob McDonnell has ceremonially signed legislation aimed at improving school and campus safety in Virginia.
The top Democrat on the House education committee says any discussion about school safety needs to be coupled with “common sense strategies to keep guns out of the hands of those who intend harm.”
