Columbus Day has been a federal holiday since 1937, but some cities are choosing not to honor the famous explorer that sailed the ocean blue.
Metro trains will start running two hours early on Sunday to help runners traveling to the Army Ten-Miler.
Some city services will be suspended in Washington in observance of Columbus Day. The holiday may also serve as a preview of what’s to come if the federal government shutdown continues.
Metro says weekend work will affect the Red and Orange Lines starting Friday night and continuing through Sunday.
