In 2012, the Washington Nationals had their first winning record since they began play in D.C. in 2005, and they played the first playoff series in Washington in 79 years. The Nationals took D.C. fans through a roller coaster of emotions in the National League Division Series. Now that D.C. fans have had a taste of playoff baseball, they can only hope that this year was just the beginning.

D.C.’s first home playoff baseball victory since 1933 was an October classic. When Jayson Werth launched a Lance Lynn fastball into the leftfield bullpen at Nationals Park in the bottom of the ninth inning, 44,392 fans went absolutely crazy. All of a sudden the Nats are in the driver’s seat, with 21-game winner Gio Gonzalez set to pitch Game 5 against Adam Wainwright (14-13) Friday at 8:37 p.m. at Nationals Park.

Carpenter Pitches Cardinals Past Nationals 8-0 for 2-1 Lead

Taking the mound for only the fourth time in 2012, missing a rib after surgery to cure numbness on his right side, the 37-year-old Carpenter pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning, rookie Pete Kozma delivered a three-run homer, and the defending champion Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 8-0 Wednesday to take a 2-1 lead in their NL division series.

Gio Wins 20, Nats Crush Brewers 10-4

Gio Gonzalez became the majors’ first 20-game winner in 2012, and the first pitcher for a Washington baseball team with 200 strikeouts since Walter Johnson in 1916, taking a shutout into the sixth inning Saturday to help the Nationals close in on their first NL East title by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 10-4.
