Former Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook joined Holden & Danny to give his thoughts on various story lines from around the league, including why he thinks his former team struggled last season.
After an impressive career at Villanova University, Westbrook was selected by the Eagles in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He went on to appear in two pro bowls and was twice named to the NFL all-pro team.
The Eagles current quarterback, Michael Vick, was recently quoted saying “I think we have a chance to develop a dynasty.” These comments have drawn varied reactions from around the NFL and once again put the spot light on a team that did not live up to their offseason expectations last season.
When asked about his thoughts on Vick’s comments, Westbrook said that he’s all for players being confident but any discussions of a dynasty are premature.
“I would save the dynasty talk until later,” said Westbrook. “Show me when you’ve won one, then we can talk dynasty.”
The Eagles were the leagues most talked about team last offseason after they acquired numerous, highly sought after free agents including Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins. Despite the infusion of talent, the Eagles had a disappointed start of the season and ended up missing the playoffs.
Westbrook attributes his former teams’ struggles to their, more specifically Vick’s, inability to take care of the football.
“Turnovers. It was a basic story of too many turnovers at the wrong time,” Westbrook said. “Michael Vick was a part of a lot of them – fumbles, interceptions, turnovers – when you have that, you can’t win football games.”
Despite their meager performance last year, many have the Eagles as the favorite to win the NFC East division in 2012. Westbrook thinks the team can turn it around if they start the next year the way they concluded last season.
“If the Eagles eliminate some of the turnovers and play good defense the way they did in the last four games of the season, they’ll be successful this year,” said Westbrook.
