Despite Early Adversity, Capitals Are ‘Building Towards Something’

One month into the 2017-18 schedule, the Capitals (5-6-1, 11 points) have struggled out of the gate.

Coming off a bitter road trip, in which they went 1-2 — with losses in Vancouver and Calgary — the Caps are, as Jay Beagle describes, going through some adversity early in the season. Which is not a bad thing, the veteran forward assures.

“Obviously we weren’t happy with one win, two losses,” Beagle told The Sports Junkies during his weekly segment — ‘The Morning Skate with Jay Beagle,’ sponsored by Sport Automotive — Tuesday morning.

“The state of the team is we know that we’re building towards something,” he said. “When that happens, sometimes adversity happens right away, or sometimes it happens midway through the season. Sometimes it happens at the end of the season — we’ve seen that where we’ve had unreal seasons, but we can’t for some reason figure it out or get our game right right before playoffs.”

“Right now,” he said, “we’re going through some adversity. We’ve got injuries. The wins, when they do come, they’re not coming easy and they’re not coming like they were last year in bunches, and kind of almost not playing our best and still getting wins.

“We’ve got to play our best right now to get wins, and we’ve got to play the right way to get wins, and we’re starting to realize that and trying to figure out how we’ve got to play every night, and the identity of the team, to make sure that we win every night.”

“You know, it is… it’s a lot harder than it was last year at this time,” Beagle said. “I think that’s a good thing. I’m excited. You go into practice today and have a good practice today, and the guys are always upbeat. We were upbeat yesterday. We know it’s a process and we’ve just got to make sure that we’re continuing to work on that process.”
