Report: Tanner Roark to Pitch in World Baseball Classic

WASHINGTON — Nationals pitcher Tanner Roark will reportedly step in for injured Max Scherzer in the World Baseball Classic.

Scherzer announced Monday he would no longer be participating in the global baseball tournament after suffering a setback with a previously undisclosed injury — a stress fracture in the knuckle of his right ring finger.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported Roark’s commitment to Team USA on Wednesday.

The Nationals have not confirmed Roark will play in the WBC.

Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy will also play for Team USA, whose first game is against Columbia on March 9.
