WASHINGTON — The Redskins are starting over on the defensive side of the ball, at least with the coaches, as initially reported by Jason La Canfora.

That would seemingly include coordinator Joe Barry, defensive backs coach Perry Fewell, defensive line Robb Akey, inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti, outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky, defensive quality control coach Chad Grimm and assistant defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant.

Per Mike Jones, the team has also fired strength coach Mike Clark.

However, the team’s confirmation of the firings only list four coaches: Barry, Fewell, Akey and Clark. Jones says the linebackers coaches will remain with the team for now.

The firings suggest head coach Jay Gruden is safe for this season. Gruden was expected to be retained, but this would likely guarantee it, as it is believed the decision to fire the defensive coaches came from him.

Such a move is somewhat surprising. Barry was a candidate to be fired and many thought it might be coming, but a wholesale firing is more than most expected.

Here is some of the immediate feedback and input on the report:

  1. Aside from the normal stuff (tackling, coverage, pass rush, etc.), I hope the next coordinator and defensive staff will install something that no good defense can be without, namely, ATTITUDE. j
