WASHINGTON — The Nationals clinched the NL East in Pittsburgh on Saturday night, thanks to a win over the Pirates and the New York Mets losing to the Philadelphia Phillies.
A day later, with some Nationals likely nursing hangovers, Pirates third baseman Jung Ho Kang faked a tag on Bryce Harper, forcing him into an awkward tag on third base. The tag resulted in a wrist injury for Harper, and it was decried by most as a dirty play.
Not long after, Nationals pitcher A.J. Cole threw well behind Kang in what seemed a blatant warning to the Pirates third baseman. Both benches quickly cleared, and there were angry words exchanged in the infield.
Not much came of the spat, but Pirates utility man Sean Rodriguez was ejected from the game, as was Cole.
Rodriguez was the most vocal and heated member of either team, perhaps not surprisingly considering his history.
The Nationals held on to win, 10-7, in a very long game.
