How to Navigate This Weekend’s Street Closures and Metro Work

With the grand opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture this weekend, navigating the District will be tricky.

Visitors (with timed-entry tickets obtained in advance) will be flocking to the museum on Saturday and Sunday, so expect heavy crowds and traffic in Northwest D.C. Keep in mind, there will be no public or bus parking near the museum for the dedication ceremony on Saturday.

Nearby, on the Washington Monument grounds, the “Freedom Sounds: A Community Celebration” is taking place until 5 p.m. Friday, from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

See a list of road closures on September 24 below:

  • All eastbound traffic will be diverted to northbound 18th Street N.W. from Constitution Avenue N.W.

Additionally, Metro says weekend work will affect rail travelers.

On the orange line, buses will replace trains between Vienna and East Falls Church from 7 a.m. Saturday through closing on Sunday. On the silver, blue and yellow lines, trains will operate every 20 minutes from 10 p.m. Friday until closing Sunday. Yellow line trains will operate to or from Mt. Vernon Square rather than Fort Totten.

Green and red line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals. There will be single tracking between Wheaton and Glenmont on the red line to allow for the installation of communication cable.

Good luck!
