WASHINGTON — That didn’t take long.
After the Redskins dropped their season opener, 38-16 to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football, calls came pouring in to The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan Tuesday morning.
They were not friendly calls.
Some, such as Kenneth in Hyattsville and Eric in D.C., had less than flattering things to say about coach Jay Gruden.
As Kenneth touched on, many callers weren’t happy with the play of quarterback Kirk Cousins. Charlie in Newport News actually suggested benching him for backup Colt McCoy, which is a bold strategy for Week 1.
And then there were the callers who are down on GM Scot McCloughan. McCloughan took over the GM job before last season, and he helped build a roster that surprisingly won the NFC East. In the two drafts he’s called the shots for Washington, he’s made some unexpected first-round picks, first passing on defensive end Leonard Williams in favor of guard Brandon Scherff, then opting for receiver Josh Doctson instead of addressing needs along each line.
All it took was one ugly loss, and callers, such as John in Arlington and John in Waldorf, were questioning his decision-making.
On that last topic, host Eric Bickel agrees — somewhat.
“I just think that McCloughan is good, he’s not amazing. And it’s funny, the bloom is off the McCloughan rose. I think it’s official.” – EB
