WASHINGTON — Just because you’re a professional athlete doesn’t mean you’re friends with all professional athletes.
That is (usually) especially true for the lowest guys on the totem pole, such as undrafted free agents just hoping to sneak onto an NFL roster. Somebody like, say Redskins receiver Kendal Thompson.
Thompson made the game-winning touchdown grab, a one-hander at that, in Washington’s second preseason contest, a 22-18 win against the New York Jets. The catch was a thing of beauty, especially for a player who had yet to record a catch in the NFL.
Yes, this is the first catch he made as a professional football player. Not bad.
Another thing that’s not bad? Following it up with this catch on the two-point conversion.
And a final cherry on top? How about the most popular and famous athlete in D.C. giving you props?
As the Redskins website unearthed, Harper and Thompson actually played on the same summer baseball team for several years when they were kids, and they have remained close ever since.
Harper’s camaraderie probably won’t help the former quarterback make the Redskins roster, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. After all, the 2015 NL MVP has vouched for Thompson before.
