WASHINGTON — There’s a great video making the rounds on social media, showing Washington Nationals slugger Daniel Murphy giving his best Dikembe Mutombo impression to a pigeon.
If you haven’t seen it, here is that gif alongside one of Mutumbo:
While the clip is amusing, Murphy is enough of a professional to not wag his finger at pigeons during pennant chases. From the way his head shifts at the end of the video, it’s pretty clear that he wasn’t even looking at the pigeon while making the gesture.
The much more likely scenario is that Murphy was communicating with other infielders, or coaches in the dugout, to understand the defensive formation for the next batter.
The waving finger isn’t a stern shunning for his avian friend, but rather confirming that a particular play is on.
Then again, maybe that pigeon needs to keep his distance.
