WASHINGTON — Eighth-grader Royce Mann performed a heated, incentive-laced slam poem as part of a school competition this spring. He won first place.
The poem, entitled “White Boy Privilege,” is almost certain to touch a nerve, for good or bad. Many are hailing the poem by Mann, 14, as a beautiful, heartfelt acknowledgment of racial and sexual disparities in the United States. Others are ripping it as a racist diatribe that promotes generalizations and stereotypes.
There has been more positive acclaim than negative thus far, it appears, though the video has nearly as many negative reactions as positive.
