WASHINGTON — Mets fan Joe La Rocca was floored by Nationals fans’ generosity last month after a video went viral of his son playing catch with Max Scherzer at Citi Field.
A number of those fans had reached out to Joe on Twitter, flooding his mentions with all kinds of nice gestures. One season ticket-holding Nats fan even offered Joe and his son, also named Joe, a pair of tickets to a game at Nats Park, insisting ‘any game you want.’
It was an all-around touching story, a once-in-a-lifetime experience which left the elder Joe feeling some kind of way about his lifelong loyalty to the Mets.
“I have to be a Met fan. My dad was a Brooklyn Dodger fan. I’m a Met fan,” La Rocca told The Sports Junkies via phone in May. “But we are definitely Scherzer fans and I have to get him a Scherzer jersey, for sure.”
Days later Joe pushed his loyalty aside and went through with purchasing his son that Scherzer jersey, because sometimes sports transcend enemy lines.
One month later, the father and son have made the trek down to Nationals Park for a game against — you guessed it — the Mets.
And wouldn’t you know? They got to meet a player from their favorite team after all.
