Petition Launched To Ban Donald Trump From Entering United Kingdom

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — A petition has been launched to block Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump from entering the United Kingdom following his proposal to bar Muslims from coming into the United States.

The official petition has already received over 170,000 signatures as of Wednesday morning – and is climbing rapidly. Since the petition has already reached over 100,000 signatures, Parliament will consider it for debate.

“The U.K. has banned entry to many individuals for hate speech. The same principles should apply to everyone who wishes to enter the U.K.,” the petition reads. “If the United Kingdom is to continue applying the ‘unacceptable behavior’ criteria to those who wish to enter its borders, it must be fairly applied to the rich as well as poor, and the weak as well as powerful.”

The petition’s website actually crashed at one point because so many people were trying to sign it.

The petition comes after Trump proposed that all Muslims should be banned from entering the U.S. following the terror attack in San Bernardino, California, that left 14 dead.

“Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension. Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine. Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life,” Trump said in a statement.

A spokesperson for British Prime Minister David Cameron told CBS News Trump’s proposal is “divisive, unhelpful and quite simply wrong.”

London’s mayor also blasted the billionaire candidate.

“I think he’s portraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit to hold the office of president,” Boris Johnson said, according to CBS News.

Teresa May, the U.K. government minister in charge of the Home Office, told CBS News it is important for politicians to work for “cohesion among communities rather than division” globally, but would not say if she would consider banning the GOP candidate.

Trump announced Tuesday night that he will be traveling to Israel before the end of the year. He has yet to comment about the petition.
