FREDERICK, Md. — The father of an ice cream truck driver who was gunned down in front of children says his son had turned his life around after some run-ins with the law.

Tony Brown Sr. of Wintersville, Ohio, said Tuesday that Brandon Brown had started working as a plumber’s apprentice just three days before he was fatally shot in Frederick.

Brandon served time for a 2012 assault, but his father said his son had left that life behind.

An attorney for Larnell Lyles, the man charged in the attack, says Brown had been stalking Lyles and had told people he was going to kill him over a $20 debt.

Defense attorney Carl Somerlock says Lyles was surprised to see Brown selling ice cream. He won’t say whether Lyles fired the fatal shots.
