D.C. United May be Considering a Move to Virginia

WASHINGTON — Many thought the deal for a new D.C. United stadium at Buzzard Point was settled back in December.

So when fans heard the team is looking at other options outside the District, many were surprised.

How does this sound for a Major League Soccer team name: the Loudoun United?

The ownership of D.C. United are looking at possible stadium sites in Virginia, as first reported by the Washington Post.

Mayor Muriel Bowser says the deal is just “too sweet” for D.C.’s soccer team to walk away from.

“I think that’s always been a rumor,” Bowser says. “Anytime you have these mega-rich sports teams, they try to compete and pit jurisdictions against each other. Our approach has always been to put a fair deal on the table.”

The Washington Post is reporting the team is looking at a possible Loudoun County location.

“We’re committed to having soccer — D.C. United — with their forever home at Buzzard Point,” Bowser says. “I don’t really know how you get a sweeter deal than what’s on the table.”
