WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — A former top CIA official warns that we’re going to see another 9-11-style attack if the United States doesn’t keep the pressure on terrorists.
“One of the key lessons in the fight against terrorists is that you have to keep the pressure on them,” former CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell told “CBS This Morning” on Monday. “If you keep the pressure on them you make it very difficult for them to plot, you make it very difficult for them to plan, you make it very difficult for them to attack because they’re worried about their own security. As soon as you take that pressure off, they start rebuilding. We’ve seen that over and over and over again. So if we don’t keep the pressure on, we’re going to see another 9/11-style attack.”
Morell echoed Homeland Secretary Jeh Johnson’s comments where he warned that lone-wolf terrorists can strike the U.S. “at any moment.” Morell stated that the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is “growing every day.”
“I think the statement by Jeh Johnson is a reflection of that. I think what the administration is trying to do is trying to set expectations for the American people, basically saying there’s going to be another attack,” Morell told CBS News. “And we need to understand when that happens.”
He continued, “We have to do whatever we can to stop guys who went to Iraq and Syria from coming back to the United States and we have to try to get a better handle on the self-radicalization that’s taking place with these lone wolfs.”
Morell added that ISIS’ social media strategy is “Madison Avenue quality.”
“It’s Madison Avenue quality social media that’s radicalizing these guys. It’s very difficult to shut it down b/c of the nature of the internet. If you shut it down over here it pops right back up over here,” Morell said.
During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Johnson said the global terrorism threat is evolving.
“Just on my watch in the last 16 months, we’ve had to ramp up our communications with state and local law enforcement because of the manner in which the global terrorist threat is evolving,” Johnson told ABC News.
Morell and Johnson’s comments come as ISIS-affiliate hackers warn Monday that they will carry out cyberattacks at 2 p.m. ET, Vocativ reports.
The message called “Message to America” promises something that will “frighten America.”
