WASHINGTON — Cinco de Mayo, to be clear, celebrates the day in 1862 when the Mexican army defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla during the French occupation of Mexico.
In the United States, many take this day to celebrate margaritas and Tex-Mex food, instead.
No matter which category you fall into, here are some ways to celebrate:
Chili’s restaurants are offering a free appetizer, dessert or kid’s meal with the purchase of an adult entree with coupon.
Work off all those margarita-and-taco-calories at a free Zumba session. A Cinco de Mayo Zumba Fitness Party will be hosted by VIDA Fitness at The Park at CityCenter (corner of 10th and I Streets in NW D.C.) starting at 6:30 p.m.
More of a homebody? While it’s not technically a freebie, Chipotle just revealed the restaurant’s guacamole recipe for the world to copy.
If you are going out, don’t forget to designate a sober driver or get a free ride home from the Washington Regional Alcohol Program.
WRAP’s 2015 Cinco de Mayo SoberRide program will be offered from 4 p.m. May 5 until 4 a.m. May 6. To receive a free cab ride home (up to a $30 fare), call 800-200-8294 (TAXI).
