BOWIE, Md. — Officials say a young girl is dead and her grandmother has two broken legs after they were struck by a van in Bowie.

Authorities say the two were walking Saturday afternoon at Laurel-Bowie Road and Old Chapel Road when they were struck.

Authorities say that the vehicle that hit them was trying to make a left turn off of Old Chapel Road onto Laurel-Bowie Road when it struck them. Both the girl and her grandmother were taken to a hospital. The girl was pronounced dead and her grandmother is in serious condition.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for the child’s funeral expenses.

According to the website, there will be a candlelight vigil held in honor of the two-year-old girl on Wednesday night near the intersection of 197 and Old Chapel Rd.

The driver remained on the scene. An investigation is ongoing.
