WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – While his speech highlighted his commitment to bi-partisanship, a bit of ad lib by the president unintentionally highlighted the deep differences that still exist between Democrats and Republicans.
“I have no more campaigns to run,” Mr. Obama noted during the State of the Union address. This was met with a round of applause from Republicans, as well as laughter from across the room.
Obama began the next line, but then stopped to jab back at the right: “I know because I won both of them,” he retorted, which drew an ovation from Democrats.
Afterwards the president resumed his plea for less political bickering on Capitol Hill. “My only agenda for the next two years is the same as the one I’ve had since the day I swore an oath on the steps of this Capitol: to do what I believe is best for America.”
