LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — One man is dead and another is in serious condition following what appears to be a domestic murder-suicide attempt in Laurel.
Police say they were called to the scene on the 3300 block of Sudlersville South around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, officers found a man lying dead in the road, having suffered from what looked like gunshot wounds. They interviewed witnesses on the scene and determined the suspected shooter fled on foot to the 300 block of Old Line Avenue.
As officers secured a perimeter around that area, the man barricaded himself in a shed.
Officers tried to talk to the suspect but were not successful. Members of the Special Operations Section then entered the shed and found the man suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Hospital with life threatening injuries and is now under guard pending first-degree murder charges.
The victim has been identified as 39-year-old Howard Richard Popp Jr., of Baltimore. The suspect, also 39, is from Laurel. His name will be released when he is formally charged.
Investigators say the suspect’s wife had separated from him in July and obtained a protective order against him. Popp was dating the suspect’s wife and the couple had just gotten out of a car parked on Sudlersville South when the suspect allegedly shot Popp.
