ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (WNEW/AP) — A man is dead after being shot by police for confronting officers with a knife, Howard County Police say.
Police responded to the 7600 block of Coachlight Lane, Ellicott City, around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday for a suicide in progress. Officers entered a bedroom inside the home and found the man suffering from several serious self-inflicted stab wounds.
As officers entered the room to assist the man, he confronted them with the knife. Police say two officers were forced to fire their weapons.
Officials say police are not certain if the man was hit.
The man, identified as 45-year-old Darren Friedman, was flown to Shock Trauma where he was pronounced dead.
The cause of death is undermined at this time, pending autopsy results.
The investigation is ongoing.
