Browns to Name Manziel or Hoyer Starter vs. Redskins Later This Week
BEREA, Ohio — Browns coach Mike Pettine expects to name a starting quarterback for next Monday’s game against the Washington Redskins sometime this week.
Until then, the competition remains wide open.
During a rain-soaked practice Monday morning, Brian Hoyer continued to take reps with the first-team offense, while Johnny Manziel practiced with the second-team. Both quarterbacks struggled in the sloppier conditions, with Hoyer throwing two interceptions.
Pettine said that he will mix the reps through the week, expecting to make a decision with the staff based on a number of factors.
In Saturday’s preseason opener, Hoyer was 6 of 14 for 92 yards. Manziel completed seven passes in 11 attempts, adding 27 rushing yards on six carries.
