Heath Shuler Mocks Failed NFL Career in Dish Network Commercial (Video)

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – U.S. Congressman Heath Shuler, perhaps more commonly regarded as the biggest bust in Redskins history, reminisces his college days in a new television commercial for Dish Network, alongside fellow NFL flameouts Matt Leinart and Brian Bosworth.
Shuler, 42, selected 3rd overall by the Redskins in 1994, was never able to recreate his immense college success at the game’s highest level, intercepting his way out of the league in a matter of four seasons.
In the video, Shuler can be seen sharing a booth in a diner with Leinart, 31, who overhears a conversation between a man and a stuffed kangaroo sitting at the nearby bar.
“Seriously, Dish is awesome,” the man says. “Now we can watch live college football anywhere.”
“I know,” the kangaroo says. “It’s like we’re back in college.”
“I wish,” the man says.
“College?” Leinart interrupts. “I can go back to college?”
“Um, yea. Every game day with Dish,” the kangaroo informs a hopeful Leinart.
“I’m in,” a gleeful Shuler chimes.
“I think that’s Heat Shuler,” the man says.
“What’s up guys?” The Boz, 49, appears.
“We’re going back to college,” a giddy Leinart says.
“Take me with you,” The Boz pleads.
Ah, a blissfully sweet redemption all these years later, both for Redskins fans, who can finally embrace Shuler’s lighthearted approach to an otherwise sensitive topic, and for the subjects themselves — Shuler in particular — who seem relieved to point to their respective shortcomings with an admirable level of self-deprecation.
While I cannot verify the spot’s airing nationally, I can faithfully report I saw it late-night Monday on ESPN in Washington, D.C.
Shuler passed for 2,403 yards and 13 touchdowns, while throwing the ball to the opposing team on 19 occasions in three seasons (19 games) with the Redskins. He’s been much more successful politicking.
Somehow, Saints fans may hate him more though. Shuler threw 2 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions in his sole season with New Orleans.
UPDATE: There’s already another video with JaMarcus Russell.
