WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — A few weeks back, Gatorade released a new issue of its ‘League of Captains’ comic book line, this one featuring Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.
Copies are apparently being handed out to fans at training camp in Richmond, Va., which seems a good reason to take a closer look.
Looking inside “TRIIIPLE IMPACT,” you’ll find a comic that, if not set to, at least inspired by Griffin’s first career NFL Game — the 2012 season-opener, in which the Redskins dispensed of the New Orleans Saints, 40-32.
There are certainly plenty of similarities to that game, at least, like how it concludes with Griffin Griffining.
But the story does, at times, depart form its non-fiction parent version, like in how Griffin leads his team to victory from behind (in reality, the Redskins never trailed), or in how, in the comic, the Redskins are home (the Saints hosted in 2012), but after all, it is a story designed to inspire children, so liberties pardoned.
As such, the story also portrays Griffin in high school, as a three-sport athlete.
Although there is one awkward close-up of Griffin’s knee (eek! yea, that knee). The intent there, I believe, was to focus in on RGIII’s freakish cartoonish physique.
Also included are inspirational quotes from RGIII, like this one:
“Even when you think you’re working hard, you can still work harder. When you think you’ve given enough, you can give a whole lot more. That’s the way I approach every day. Seize every day. There’s no guarantee that I’ll wake up tomorrow so I want to make sure I get through everything today.”
And an RGII shout-out!
The comic was authored by Brian Buccellato and illustrated by Kagen McLeod. On Gatorade’s website, fans can design their own “athlete superhero.”

The ‘League of Captains’ characters, also including Cam Newton, J.J. Watt, Eli Manning and Peyton Manning, will also be featured on a new line of Gatorade bottles, the television ads for which just hit the internet today. Cartoon Griffin adorns the lemon-lime bottle, and is doing ‘push-ups’ on a grocery store shelf in his feature ad.
