Expect Traffic in DC Aug. 3-7

LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — D.C. motorists should prepare themselves for road closures from Aug. 4-7 as the leaders of more than 40 African countries come to town for the 2014 U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit.

Beginning Sunday, roads will be closed throughout D.C., and officials say those traveling in the area should expect road closures, detours and parking restrictions. The Secret Service released a detailed map of the road closures.

DDOT’s Reggie Sanders says if you are driving downtown this week, you can expect to be stuck in traffic.

– Constitution Ave. Ramp Eastbound between E St. (exit off the Roosevelt Bridge) to 23rd St. from 12 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. All traffic must exit onto Independence Ave. and proceed to the Tidal Basin to 17th St. NW, continue on Independence Ave. Eastbound or Ohio Dr. eastbound.
– Constitution Ave. Westbound two outermost lanes will be closed from 19th St. NW to Henry Bacon Dr. from 12 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eastbound traffic is open with lane restrictions to Henry Bacon, northbound on Henry Bacon to Lincoln Memorial Circle, to the Arlington Memorial Bridge.
– Virginia Ave. Eastbound only between 23rd St. NW and 18th St. NW from 12 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Virginia Ave. Westbound will remain open
– Constitution Ave. both directions between 17th St. NW and 23rd St. NW from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Traffic southbound from 18th/19th St. will be allowed to flow eastbound on Constitution Ave. NW during this time.
– Constitution Ave. Eastbound all lanes open with restricted access to Henry Bacon. All Westbound Constitution traffic will be forced onto Henry Bacon and over the Memorial Bridge. Arlington Memorial Bridge and Rock Creek Parkway will funnel through Lincoln Memorial Circle to Henry Bacon Ave. to Constitution.
– C St. NW both sides between Virginia Ave. NW and 23rd St. NW from 12 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
– D St. NW between E St. Expressway and Virginia Ave. NW from 12 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
– 19th St. NW Southbound curb lane only between E St. NW and Virginia Ave. NW from 12 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
– 20th St. NW between C St. NW and Constitution Ave. NW from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m.

As for public transportation:

Metrorail:
– Metrorail service is not expected to be impacted. On weekdays, Metrorail opens at 5 a.m. and closes at midnight. The closest Metrorail station to the State Department is Foggy Bottom Station on the Orange, Silver, and Blue lines. The closest stations to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel are the Smithsonian Station on the Orange, Silver, and Blue lines, and L’Enfant Plaza Station on the Orange, Silver, Blue, Yellow and Green lines.

Metrobus:
– Several Metrobus routes will be detoured due to street closures around Summit Event locations, including routes A9, A42, A46, A48, D51, H1, L1, N3, S1, V7, X1, W9, 31, 32, 36, 39, 52, 80, 3Y, 7Y, 11Y and 16Y. Riders traveling on these routes are encouraged to allow additional travel time on Aug. 4 and Aug. 5.

MetroAccess:
– Due to street closures, MetroAccess vehicles may not be able to provide para-transit service to certain locations within the security zone.

Waterways:
– There will be an enhanced security presence on the waterways of the Potomac River around Washington, DC. The waterside initiatives are one of many layers of increased security during the event. The Coast Guard will continue to perform its standard missions of search, rescue and law enforcement in addition to their homeland security responsibilities.
