WHEATON, Md. (WNEW) — A 13-year-old suspect is in custody after a Wednesday morning shooting in Wheaton.

Police said Wednesday morning that they were looking for several teenage boys after an 18-year-old woman was shot during an alleged botched robbery near Plyers Mill Road and Douglas Avenue.

Montgomery County Police say the woman was walking with a group of girlfriends when they met a group of males just before 5:30 a.m.

Police are unsure what happened next, but they believe a physical altercation occurred and one of the boys opened fire, striking the 18-year-old woman multiple times.

The group of boys fled on foot. The woman was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The boy will be charged with attempted murder and armed robbery, according to Montgomery County police.

Police say there is a connection between the group of females and males.

The mother and boyfriend of the woman who was shot tell WNEW reporter John Domen that the shooting stemmed from a robbery gone bad.

Domen says officers have been searching through the front yard of a home near the shooting scene for evidence. Police say the suspects and gun used in the shooting haven’t been located.
