Wikipedia Blocks Page Edits From Congress
WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – House staffers may have a harder time updating their bosses Wikipedia pages after a series of rogue edits were brought to light, reports the BBC.
The operators of the free online encyclopedia imposed a 10-day ban on anonymous and often frivolous changes made to entries on politicians and businesses.
For example, the bio for former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was changed to say he was an “alien lizard.”
The ban targets edits from computers using the IP address belonging to the House of Representatives.
Another change was made to the page on the assassination of John F Kennedy; it was edited to say that Lee Harvey Oswald was acting “on behalf of the regime of Fidel Castro.”
A page about moon landing conspiracy theories was altered to say they were “promoted by the Cuban government”.
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales told the BBC that he wasn’t surprised by the malicious changes. Online vandalism has “always gone on and it always will,” he added.
