LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — A man has been charged with neglect after he allegedly left his elderly mother inside a hot car for nearly five hours outside a Maryland casino.
Police say they were called to the parking garage at Maryland Live! Casino in Anne Arundel County just after 6:30 p.m. Monday for the report of an elderly woman who was sitting unaccompanied inside a truck.
The 98-year-old woman, who police say is confined to a wheelchair and incapable of providing the basic needs for herself, was confused and incoherent when officers arrived at the scene. Police say only one of the truck’s windows was partially open and the temperature inside the vehicle topped 80 degrees.
Police later learned that the woman’s son, Dwight McGinnis Jr., 67, of Raleigh, N.C., had driven her to the casino just after 1:30 p.m. and left her in the truck for nearly five hours while he was inside.
Police were able to contact McGinnis just before 7:30 p.m., and placed him under arrest when he returned to his vehicle.
He’s been charged with vulnerable adult neglect and also was served with an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for a driving suspended charge.
