WASHINGTON (WNEW/AP) — A sinkhole will make the commute into downtown Washington more difficult than usual.

The District Department of Transportation has closed two lanes of northbound 14th Street Northwest, between Constitution Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue. The department says the closure will last through Friday morning’s rush hour, and officials are urging drivers to use alternate routes.

The two-by-four-foot sinkhole opened on Tuesday. A spokesman for DC Water says the hole was caused by an opening in a sewer, and crews are working to repair the damaged pipe. DDOT says the repairs may not be completed until this weekend.

The street is one of the most heavily traveled commuter routes into the District of Columbia from Virginia.

A creative social media artist is making the most of the sinkhole by resurrecting a cheeky Twitter account that tweets messages as the sinkhole, itself. The account, @14thStSinkhole, was first created when another large sinkhole previously snarled traffic for days on the same street.
