LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — A shoplifter drowned after leaping into a pond while being chased by Arundel Mills Mall security officers Monday night, police say.

The man ignored pleas from mall security to return to the side of a 900-yard long storm-water runoff pond filled with sediment and thick vegetation. As he continued to swim away from officers it appeared he dove head first back underwater and did not resurface, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

Mall security called firefighters and paramedics to the pond, located in the northwest corner of a parking lot, shortly before 9 p.m.

Following an extensive search, divers discovered the man’s body underwater near the middle of the pond around 11:15 p.m., police say.

A preliminary investigation found nothing suspicious about the man’s death. Medical examiners will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of the man’s death.

Police have not released the man’s identity.
