LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — Good news, travel and cycling-lovers.
Amtrak’s new baggage cars, which will be used on all of Amtrak’s 15 long-distance routes by the end of this year, will be able to accommodate roll-on bikes. The cars are currently in the testing phase.
Bicycles checked in a bicycle container for $10, in lieu of a piece of baggage. Bicycle boxes are sold for $15 per box. Folding bikes under a certain size are also allowed onboard in lieu of a piece of baggage.
“It’s clear that Americans want a national system of intercity passenger rail and Amtrak is moving ahead to build new equipment to meet customer demand,” Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman said in a statement.
On the Amtrak blog post announcing the upgrade, customer comments applauded the decision.
