ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Alexandria police are investigating the slaying of a woman who was found dead in her home shortly before noon July 4.
While the cause of death was not immediately apparent, police say the case was ruled a homicide after an autopsy.
The victim has been identified as 43-year-old Asabech Abayneh. The Office of the Virginia Medical Examiner says strangulation was the cause of death, according to a Channel 9 report.
The homicide is Alexandria’s third of 2014. The normally quiet city had been dealing with a string of unsolved killings, most recently the fatal shooting of a music teacher inside her home earlier this year.
Police have said that former Alexandria resident Charles Severance is the focus of their investigation into that and two other slayings. Severance has not been charged but is in custody in Loudoun County on an unrelated weapons charge.
The Alexandria Police Department asks that anyone with information regarding Abayneh or her movements in the past several weeks contact Detective Loren King at 703-746-6689.
