LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) – Police say a drunken driver has been charged in a hit-and-run collision that killed a 21-year-old woman near the University of Maryland early Sunday morning.

Prince George’s County Police say Janelle Marie Oni of Randallstown, Maryland was struck while crossing Route 1 near Hartwick Road just before 3 a.m. She died at the scene, according to authorities.

Police searched for the car involved in the hit-and-run for a short time, and later tweeted that the driver was taken into custody under suspicion of driving under the influence.

Jacky Luangraj, 33, of Manassas, Virginia, faces 13 charges, including reckless endangerment, driving under the influence and negligent homicide by automobile while under the influence. At the time of his arrest, police say his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit.

The road was shutdown overnight while authorities investigated the collision, but has since been reopened.

The incident was the sixth such instance this year along the stretch of road near the University of Maryland.

A University of Maryland student was killed in a hit-and-run collision just one block away from Hartwick Road in January.
