LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) – Decked out in their 4th of July best, Christian Reiter and his new wife, Emily, couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this year’s Independence Day – and for good reason.
The Reiters – who are stationed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center – say they tied the knot in mid-June, and decided to spend the holiday with their family on the National Mall.
Christian’s parents, Tammy and Charles, say they drove all night from Florida to the nation’s capital to spend July 4th with their son and new daughter-in-law, who they had never met before Friday.
Emily told WNEW’s Chuck Carroll that the family had headed down to the Capitol early to take in all of the sights.
Tammy Reiter said she was overwhelmed by the patriotism in Washington.
“I am blown away by D.C. This is probably the greatest place on Earth to be at on Fourth of July,” she said. “What a day to be here.”
About 700,000 people are expected to flock to the National Mall to enjoy the fireworks show, which begins around 9 p.m.
