LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Though the World Cup has drawn to a close for Team U.S.A., thousands of fans are pushing to reward goalkeeper Tim Howard’s heroic efforts by renaming an airport near the nation’s capital in his honor.

A White House petition to change the name of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to Tim Howard National Airport appeared online shortly after the U.S. lost to Belgium in extra time Tuesday evening. Howard recorded a World Cup record 16 saves in the match, a feat he called bittersweet.

“Whereas Tim Howard has shown himself to be a national treasure,” the petition begins. The petition’s creator also referred to Howard as the “Minister of Defense” and a “Friend of Joe Biden.”

“(We) politely request that we rename the airport to recognize his accomplishments, and meritorious service to the United States of America,” it concludes.

The petition needs 100,000 signatures by July 31 to be considered by the White House. As of early Wednesday, just shy of 2,000 soccer fans had digitally affixed their names to the proposal.
