Gaithersburg Parking Garage Evacuated After Gas Leak

LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) – A Gaithersburg parking garage was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after an “uncontrolled” gas leak was discovered.

Washington Gas and Montgomery County Fire crews were called to the 9700 block of Fields Road around 1:30 p.m. for reports of a gas leak.

A construction worker struck a six-inch gas line with a backhoe near the open-air garage, according to Washington Gas.

Fields Road was closed between Rio Boulevard and Washingtonian Boulevard while crews worked to evacuate the garage and repair the line. Gas to the line was turned off more than an hour later.

Montgomery County Fire spokesperson Pete Piringer tweeted before 3 p.m. that the leak was under control, but some roads were still closed.
