Man Charged with Robbing Four Banks in Montgomery County

LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — Police in Montgomery County have arrested a Hyattsville man in connection to a string of bank robberies that began last December.

Jose Mercedes, 45, was taken into custody after robbing an M&T Bank in the 10400 block of Montgomery Avenue in Bethesda Monday afternoon, authorities say.

After fleeing the bank with cash, K9 officers were able to track Mercedes to a nearby shed on McComas Avenue where he was hiding. A money bag and other items connecting him to the robbery were found a short distance away, police say.

While being interrogated by authorities, Mercedes confessed to three other bank robberies in the county.
