Heat Wave Is Officially Record Breaking

LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — The sweltering heat currently baking the mid-Atlantic can officially be called record breaking.

The high temperature of 97 degrees recorded Tuesday in Washington bested a previous high of 95 degrees set in 1991.

Wednesday is expected to be the hottest day of the week with temperatures soaring into the mid-to-upper 90’s.

In Washington, it is possible a 70-year-old record of 97 degrees could be surpassed. The same record temperature for Baltimore, set in 1957, may also be eclipsed.

If potential afternoon thunderstorms develop, they should usher in late day relief, but the heat will return Thursday.

The Emergency Management Agency in D.C. has declared a heat emergency and opened a number of cooling centers.
